So a teaser trailer of Christopher Nolan's upcoming sci-fi film Interstellar, which will be released on November 1, 2014, has been released online earlier and I must say, it looks pretty amazing already.
Aside from the Dark Knight trilogy, it's been over 3 years now since Nolan's original film Inception, and I'm actually excited for this. Nolan's other works like Following, Memento and The Prestige have been my favourites, it always has artistic style, convoluted narrative and interesting premises. And this shows promise.
What I like about this trailer is it feels important. Using NASA footage with McConaughey's voice-over narration, it already has that artistic style to it which doesn't surprise me. "Perhaps we've just forgotten that we are still pioneers," he says. "And we've barely begun; that our greatest accomplishments cannot be behind us and that our destiny lies above us."
I'm unsure about the premise of the film, but it does look like it explores around space and time travel and alternative dimensions. The movie is based on scientific theories and script treatment of theoretical physicist Kip Thorne and here is the official synopsis:
"The film chronicles the adventures of a group of explorers make use of a newly discovered wormhole to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage"
Sounds just as complicated as Inception but it sounds interesting. It has a great cast; Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, and Matthew McConaughey's performance from that short clip looks very dramatic. What's unusual though is that it has a completely different look and feel to it compared to Nolan's other works. With cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema, who recently worked with The Fighter and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, taking over Wally Pfister's spot after Pfister's directorial debut Transcendence, it'll be intriguing how this whole film will look. Other than that, I can say I am looking forward to this film. It already looks like it will do well in the box office and a potential Oscar winning film.
