Oscars 2014 Predictions

Academy Awards announced the nominees today and there were a few shocks; Meryl Streep for August: Osage County and Jonah Hill for The Wolf Of Wall Street, and a few snubs (which were predictable); Tom Hanks for Captain Phillips and Emma Thompson for Saving Mr. Banks. Without further a due, i'm going to list down my predictions, including my personal picks and few shock winners.

Best Motion Picture of the Year

My prediction: 12 Years A Slave

My personal pick: Gravity

12 Years A Slave have already won numerous awards this season and it'll be no surprise that it will win Best Picture but I'd be shocked if Gravity takes the award it truly deserves.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role

My prediction: Chiwetel Ejiofor for 12 Years A Slave

My personal pick: Matthew McConaughey for Dallas Buyers Club

The battle for the spot of Best Actor this year is fierce, with a few snubbed (Tom Hanks, Joaquin Phoenix) and critics predicts Ejiofor might take the award but McConaughey was my favourite this year, he already won the Golden Globe but it's going to be really close between the two.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role

My prediction: Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine

Possible shock winner: Sandra Bullock for Gravity

Blanchett's performance in Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine was the best I've seen this year and she'll likely win the award, but there is a slight chance Bullock might take it. Another tough category compared to last year.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role

My prediction: Jared Leto for Dallas Buyers Club

Possible shock winner: Bradley Cooper for American Hustle

Leto has won numerous awards already, including the Golden Globe Award, and he is my personal favourite aswell. However, Cooper has a chance of winning for his performance.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role

My prediction: Lupita Nyong'o for 12 Years A Slave

My personal pick: Jennifer Lawrence for American Hustle

Lawrence deserves to win this award, but despite the competition with Nyong'o and already winning her Oscar last year, it's unlikely but who knows. Nyong'o has been the critics' pick this year.

Best Achievement in Directing

My prediction: Alfonso Cuarón for Gravity

Possible shock winner: Steve McQueen for 12 Years A Slave

Cuarón has already won most of the awards for Best Director this season so it'll be no surprise if he takes this award too. However, past winners has been a shock, like Tom Hooper for The King's Speech etc. and McQueen might win it to add the most wins for 12 Years A Slave.

Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen

My prediction: Spike Jonze for Her

Possible shock winner: Eric Singer and David O. Russell for American Hustle

Her is one my personal favourites this year mainly because of its script and story, and it already won lots of awards including the Golden Globe award. But all of the nominations are fantastic this year, either Woody Allen or Singer and Russell might take it.

Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published

My prediction: John Ridley for 12 Years A Slave

My personal pick: Richard Linklater, Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke for Before Midnight

Before Midnight is another personal favourite of mine this year, the script is very well written and it is a shame that 12 Years A Slave will beat it because it is the critics' prediction and has more chance of winning. Let's just hope that won't happen.

Best Animated Feature Film of the Year

My prediction: Frozen

My personal pick: Despicable Me 2

Possible shock winner: The Wind Rises

Best Foreign Language Film of the Year

My prediction: The Great Beauty

My personal pick: The Hunt

Best Achievement in Cinematography

My prediction: Gravity

Best Achievement in Editing

My prediction: Gravity

Best Achievement in Production Design

My prediction: The Great Gatsby

Possible shock winner: Gravity

Best Achievement in Costume Design

My prediction: The Great Gatsby

Possible shock winner: 12 Years a Slave

Best Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling

My prediction: Dallas Buyers Club

Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures, Original Score

My prediction: Her

Possible shock winner: Gravity

Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures, Original Song

My prediction: "Let It Go" for Frozen

Best Achievement in Sound Mixing

My prediction: Gravity

Best Achievement in Sound Editing

My prediction: Gravity

Best Achievement in Visual Effects

My prediction: Gravity
